Firefluff

This post is for my little sister who almost cried herself to death when she found out about the sweetness of My Milk Toof. Sure, I’m a little worried for her safety when she discovers the leader of adorable paintings and illustration Lisa Evans (aka Firefluff). I’m fairly certain Lisa’s site will be bookmarked immediately. My sister’s hand will soon be deformed into a claw like position from scrolling Lisa’s website over and over. Then, my sister’s eyes will just straight up burst.

Maybe I shouldn’t share Lisa’s work.

But what kind of older sister would I be if I felt that reading “death by cuteness overload” wasn’t an amusing obituary?

The Pikaland Artist Bootcamp: FAQs

Learn more about the Pikaland Artist Bootcamp!

What is the Pikaland Artist Bootcamp?
To put it quite simply, the Pikaland Artist Bootcamp is designed to get artists to start creating their art. We’ve encountered so many people who are paralyzed at the beginning, and for those who ask themselves – what should I do? How can I fill this page? How can I make my mark? How can I take my work further?

The bootcamp is an intensive four to six week course that’s geared towards different stages of an artists’ journey. We help our students by providing them with guidance, advice, tips and also constructive criticism, so that they can focus on addressing the issues that get in the way of their art making. We also cover topics like marketing for artists so that our students are well equipped to take their work to the next level.

The course is taught by Amy Ng of Pikaland and Jamie Shelman, both of whom are extremely dedicated to helping artists explore their inner strengths, while teaching them how to apply creative thinking to every aspect of art-making.

Who should sign up for bootcamp?
Artists at various stages of their career are most welcome. It doesn’t matter if you lack technical skills – what’s important is that you’ll be learning how to think creatively, so be prepared to move some mind muscles and work it!

I live in the middle of nowhere. How can I possibly attend your class?
Of course you can! All you need is an internet connection, an email account, a PC (or a Mac, if you prefer), and time to dedicate to the course.

How does it work?
All bootcamp courses are assignment based. Each week, we’ll be posting out assignments for you to do, and we will be there at the end of the week to see how far you’ve come along. There’s examples, tips, advice and lots of cat drawings (courtesy of Jamie) to spice things up. Along the way we’ll be chatting with our students and giving out one-on-one advice. No two artist are alike!

Currently our bootcamp courses cost USD$140 that covers all our hard work in creating a great syllabus and a wonderful environment for you to actively participate in. Not only has Jamie and Amy done a lot of research on all the materials presented, but they will be checking in with their students constantly, lending a hand and an ear to each one! The cost also includes an entry into the Pikaland Bootcamp Alumni, where you can continue your conversation after the course ends.

UPDATE: Please note that the course has been extended from the original duration of 4 weeks to 6 weeks due to feedback from students, hence the increase in the price of the course! This comes to about $23.35 per week, or approximately $3.50 per day (that’s less than a cup of coffee!) It’s a steal when you think about the highly personalized, one-on-one attention to the critiques and constructive criticism we give our students!

You mentioned having to dedicate a lot of time into the assignments. How much time are we talking about?
We’re not joking when we say that our assignments will make you sweat it out — creatively speaking, of course! Since no artist is the same, it can range from an hour to 12 hours for a student to finish one assignment, and that doesn’t include all the time brainstorming about the lesson! But here’s the thing: those who immerse themselves fully in the course will continue to reap tremendous benefits long after the bootcamp is over!

Do you offer private one-on-one consultations?
Yes we do! We are available for online consultations regarding your art, portfolio and shop – we charge USD$60 per hour. This option is also great for students who are looking for some extra one-on-one session after the bootcamp is over. Feel free to contact us directly through email: pikabootcam{AT!}gmail.com for more info!

So what will I get in the end?
By the end of each bootcamp, students will have had lots of fun (very important!), but most importantly, they will be leaving with a new portfolio of work, plus plenty of insight from the teachers and their classmates about their work. We place a lot of emphasis on constructive criticism and the sharing of ideas – the environment in the bootcamp is a safe one, so that each student is able to express their thoughts freely, and that way, they are also able receive feedback with an open mind. Not enough for you? Don’t take our word for it — check out what our past students had to say about our class.

Who draws those fantastic cats?
Why that’s the work of Jamie Shelman!

Do you have an online shop where I can get swag and worksheets so that we can experience the bootcamp at home?
Of course! We thought you wouldn’t ask! We have an Etsy shop where we sell worksheets for you to do at home that’s part of the Pikaland Artist Bootcamp programme and also some lovely cat drawings to keep you pumped up!

Review: Creative Inc.

I’m a freelancer for more than two years now, and July marks the second anniversary of me striking out on my own. Prior to this I was a regional architecture and design magazine editor (and helped start the magazine, no less). I had a steady paycheck, a platform where I was rather established and also fun colleagues who were fun to work with.

Creative Inc.

I started Pikaland two years ago after I found that I loved illustration more than architecture. I traded in concrete and steel for ink and paper, and have never looked back since. Starting the journey into freelancing was terrifying, although it was personally satisfying. Not only was I running Pikaland, but I was also a freelance writer, juggling stories and features with magazines and newspapers to make ends meet, with the odd copywriting job in between.

Creative Inc.

I read (actually, devoured) a lot of books that helped me out when I was starting out. Books like My So-Called Freelance Life: How to Survive and Thrive as a Creative Professional for Hire by Michelle Goodman, and Craft, Inc.: Turn Your Creative Hobby into a Business by Meg Mateo Ilasco tuned me into how I can actually pull the whole thing off. Of both books, I found that Michelle Goodman’s book was more relevant (only because Craft Inc. didn’t really apply to what I was doing — I was offering a service rather than a finished product). Goodman’s book was my bible – dog eared and worn, I still flip through it to find nuggets of information that’s useful.

Title: Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business
Paperback: 184 pages

I found that more and more illustration commissions has come my way instead of writing assignments; which led me to order a copy of Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business, the latest book from Meg Mateo Ilasco in collaboration with Joy Deangdeelert Cho (of Oh Joy!)

Creative Inc.

While My So-Called Freelance Life deals with freelance professionals across all spectrums, Creative, Inc. is geared towards creative types – illustrators, designers, photographers, stylists, etc. Like its predecessor, Craft Inc; Creative Inc. also includes interviews, but this time with various artists on making a living the freelance way.

I love the book – the paper, the straightforward writing, the color palette, the illustrations throughout and also the rounded edges of the pages. Although I had already been freelancing for a couple of years, I read the whole book from cover to cover anyway. The interviews were very insightful, and I like the variety of freelancers profiled: sole proprietors, partners, a husband-and-wife team, agents, and even accountants share their experience about freelancing.

Creative Inc.

Easy to read with different topics dedicated to the art of freelancing in each chapter, the book is systematic without being boring. What I was really pleased with was that towards the end, the book deals with the question of what if?: advice for situations like when to cut your losses, and when to expand are very timely, and it’s something that you’ll need to factor in when you’re a freelancer who’s been in the market for quite some time.

All in all, Creative, Inc. is a good reference book for any creative freelancer out there who’s looking to cover all bases in making sure that they continue to grow their business, year in and year out.

As for me, I can’t imagine life in a 9-5 office, having gone freelance. The hours are crazy and the income is even crazier. But the best thing about being able to set your own hours is the responsibility. Knowing that you and you alone are responsible for bringing home the bacon, and that if you fail it’s your fault, and that if you do make it, it’s all on you. I liken it to living on a roller coaster – only this time my eyes have to be wide open to anticipate the thrills and also having the flexibility to cushion the curves freelance life dishes out.

Creative Inc.

Not everyone is cut out for freelancing. Sure, it’s tougher than staying put in a job that you don’t like; but if you can afford to, trade in your job security and give it a go — I believe that everyone should try out freelancing at least once in their life. Trying it out will allow you to live out your dream – and then you can decide whether it’s truly something that you’d like to pursue. The experience is worth it, and life’s too short to stay shackled to someone else’s dream while you daydream about yours.

Now may be the time to live it instead.
