Discovered lovely illustrations from Hannah Warren today. She’s an artist based in the UK who has put out quite a bit of her work out there, and she has lots of personal projects too (something that I feel is really important for independent artists!) What I love about her is that her work can be deceptively simple – limited color palettes and great lines (according to her bio, she creates bold, colourful digital illustrations inspired by the strong graphic aesthetic of mid-century design); or it can take on a whole new dimension that incorporates a little complexity whenever the need arises – like this NOMA book from Phaidon, where she was commissioned to illustrate maps and create hand-drawn type.

Fellow Pinterest friend Telma Baptista pinned the work of UK-based illustrator Sarah Maycock (via Handsome Frank) onto Pikaland’s Pinterest board recently and oh my, I’ve been looking at those brushstrokes over and over again just to see if I could re-trace her steps. While her strokes are wonderfully expressive and fluid; it belies how powerful it is – she’s great at bringing out the strongest feature of each character through each stroke.

Have a lovely weekend folks!

I get a kick out of picking out work patterns of the artists/illustrators that I see. If you look closely, everyone has a subject matter or a way of working that resonates in each of their piece – like these ones by Jon Han. A lot of his work is related to climbing, ladders, a cliff, etc – a lot of them has to do with height in some ways. Go ahead and have a look at his website – it has cool animations (like this one) which are loads of fun.
