Things to see & do!

++ If you’re in New York in February, remember to drop by Charmingwall’s gallery for Julianna Bright’s solo exhibition. She’s a self-taught artist with an eye for the sweet and the whimsical, and her work will be displayed at the gallery from February 7th till 4th March.

++ Did you know that Fact & Fancy is closing down? But not to worry, Danielle is hoping to re-open it in some form or another. Until then, everything in the gallery is 30% off from now until their last day (Sunday, February 8th). Head over to their blog to sign up for their mailing list to know when they’re going to launch something new!

++ Ah giveaways. It’s a great way to start the week, and we have two to announce! The first one is from Yael Frankel and the other is from Dolan Geiman. Head over both blogs to have a look at how to get yourself some goodies!

++ The Pikaland 2009 survey is officially closed, and we had a great response! 270 responses from participants, buyers and readers — I’m reeling from the response! A big THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to leave their feedback! We’ll be in touch with the lucky draw winner by email! 🙂

We had a great Chinese New Year celebration over here last night. It’s one the most important day in the 15-day long celebration as we pay homage to the Jade Emperor (hence the lack of posts!). Offerings were made, joss-sticks were lit and firecrackers were popping all over the streets! It was the first time I’ve celebrated the occasion, I have to admit. Our reasons for celebrating has more to do with a cultural tribute, which works just fine for me — especially since I was raised in a household that doesn’t practice these interesting rituals! Allan Deas

Have you seen the latest issue of Blanket Magazine yet? It’s from their latest issue (a beautiful theme of everything blue) that I found the link to Allan Deas’ work. Everything is beautifully retro and organic in nature — two of my favorite styles put together!

Read his interview over at Blanket Magazine and see more of his work over at his portfolio.

Spread some hope

Dawn is a dear friend of mine who makes the most beautiful art. I remember looking over her flickr stream a few years ago and wanting so bad to be her friend because she is so wonderful in so many ways. She has given me so much encouragement and love; and I want to be able to give her something back for all the times she heartened me. In her own words:

This piece was created with thoughts of Valentine’s Day. I did not have anyone in mind for this piece, meaning there is no one who is waiting to receive it. So, it will need a home to go to.

I would like to offer this piece to that one person who can inspire me and give me hope for the future.

Being an environmentalist I am constantly reminded of what lies ahead for us and the environment and I can start to feel the great disconnection people have with nature, with themselves and even with the people they love, and I feel hopeless. Share with me your thoughts of what it means for you to get out and enjoy your surroundings (by yourself or with family/friends).

Please give me hope.

Be that someone special, and pass on some hope to dear Dawn. I know it will mean a lot to me if you did.
