Sponsor contest: Card Stories

Cardstories giveaway

I love adventure games of the 1990s (point and click anyone?) and I’m constantly finding new games that are also based on creativity.

So it was a lovely surprise when Deborah of Tartaruga Feliz sent me an email about her latest game called Card Stories (which was made by Farsides), I was curious to see how it played out! The premise was simple:

  1. Pick out a card, and then you write a story for your card (think of it as illustration commission, but in reverse.)
  2. Other players will have to pick a card as well to add to the mix, based on the story told by you (this is to confuse other players while they figure out which one is the real card later!).
  3. After the rest of the players have picked out their card, it generates the cards that they have chosen (a max of 6 players = 6 cards).
  4. Voting begins and the person who picks out the original card is the winner!

To celebrate the soft launch of Card Stories, Deborah is giving away physical copies of the cards to 2 selected participants!

All you need to do is to craft up a story (think of it as an illustration brief!) so that Deborah can illustrate it into a card. The best story will win a pack of 36 cards + the one you helped create!

This contest ends on 29th November 2011, so write down your idea for a card in the comments below! Hint: Short stories are best!

Head over to Card Stories to play a round and test it out for yourself!

The contest has ended and the winners have been picked – Kirsty and Zack! 🙂 Thanks everyone for joining in the contest!

Why you should take a break from your daily schedule

Sometimes a break from your routine is the very thing you need

I like predictability. A lot.

I think it has to do with having a father who was very prompt (to the minute!) and who is a master at organizing tasks at home and work. So I like to plan too, and while I’m flexible to accomodate last minute changes, I find comfort in things that run like clockwork.

But the past few months have been crazy, to say the least. I was travelling almost every week! In between work, to going out of town for a weekend with out of town friends; from weddings to a family holiday (our last one was in 2007!) – the list seemed endless.

But here’s the thing. I learned that in between all this mad rushing about, my mind was fresher than ever. It probably had to do with me being caught off guard in situations where time management was crucial, so my brain was always spinning! This break from my normal routine made me flexible enough to accomodate surprises, and it also made me plan ahead. Way, way ahead.

Because of this break in my routine, I noticed that I find inspirations in the most unlikely of situations. I have been sketching profusely and inking down thoughts and ideas for next year (already with a to-do list to boot) – and it’s all because I was forced out of my comfort zone. Random walking trips turned into power walks, where everything I saw connected with things inside my mind that I was struggling to understand. A walk through an old bookstore yielded new ideas for patterns and illustrations. A chat with a friend turned into an internal brainstorming pow-wow session that cleared the fog that had lingered in my mind for too long. The list goes on and on.

So take a break from the norm and challenge yourself – deviate away from the daily patterns and path you know so well once in a while. You might just be pleasantly surprised at where you’ll end up at.

As long as habit and routine dictate the pattern of living, new dimensions of the soul will not emerge.

Review: Let’s Make Some Great Art

Let's Make Some Great Art

Let's Make Some Great Art

So I have a confession to make.

When I first saw Marion Deuchars’ book Let’s Make Some Great Art, I was originally looking for a creative gift for a friend’s kid. But the more I flipped the pages, I was hooked. I wanted one all for myself. Besides, why should kids have all the fun?

Paperback 224 pages

I don’t have any children (not yet anyway!) and I’ve always been amused when I see parents pack an activity kit for their kids to take along for trips – be it a vacation or even a short jaunt to the mall. Because I’m just like that as well – only I pack for myself. I make sure I have a notepad or a sketchbook and a pen ready for when inspiration strikes, a book if I find myself in situations where my attention is at large, and if nothing else, there’s always my iPhone (that acts as a digital sketchbook and notepad, more often than not).

The thing is, I would totally carry Marion’s book with me, if only I didn’t raise eyebrows while I try to paint a smile onto Mona Lisa or ink my thumbs to create little animals between its pages when I’m waiting at the checkout line. Created by Marion for her kids, the book is a fascinating one, veering of being part history book and lots of art-making techniques and tips in between. I find the most wonderful of all though is the creative spirit and energy that is in the book, brought alive by Marion’s free-spirited drawings and lively tone.

From Pablo Picasso to Mondrian, Leonardo Da Vinci and Andy Warhol, Marion’s quick, breezy explanations (save for the one of Van Gogh, which I thought was rather bizarre!) along with her beautiful illustrations add lots of meat to the book. Page turning exercises, invitations to make your mark on the page and even a useful guide on what materials you can gather to use on the book makes this THE activity kit for artists of all ages.

It also depends on how you look at it, but I find that I learned new things while I went through the book. While I always kept an open mind when I went through books for children, Marion’s book just blew me away by how “grown up” and yet relaxed it is. Already I see things in a new light, and this in turn helps me think creatively – a skill that I have learned (and am reminded) from time to time that can be applied in many areas of my life.

And if indulging in my creative side does manage to raise some eyebrows? I say bring on the crayons.
