I just read over on Camilla’s blog about Morran’s surgery and found out that the vet has given her about 6-12 months to live (she’s already 13 years old), and my heart is breaking.

Camilla though (being the super person that she is) has started up a project where collecting artworks of Morran, and will be publishing it up in a book! Everyone from anywhere is invited to join in, so please read this post on her blog detailing the size of the artwork (7×7 inches) and all the details about sending it over. The deadline is 31st of October and I’m going to do one myself.

Here’s some details from Camilla:

All you have to do is to send a 300 dpi picture to info(at)studiomorran(dot)com before the 31st of October 2011. My mailbox can only take pictures up to 10 Mb, if your picture is bigger please send it through Yousendit or use Dropbox (or anything like that)

The work of Eric Hanson caught my eye yesterday when I was traipsing the aisle of books at a book fair (he illustrated the book Role Models by John Waters). I didn’t get the book, but his name was burned in my mind – it was that memorable.

Now, Eric has been illustrating and writing for the past 20 years, and I kept asking myself how could I NOT discover his work sooner. His lines are beautifully raw and organic, and I love the flamboyance that is naturally inherent in his characters – they all look like gay, fun, happy people that I’d love to hang out with. Watercolors are his mainstay, but after the book, he’s been dabbling in pencil as well (a medium which I think is beautiful, given his line quality!)

His eye for scale leads to interesting compositions and illustrations that are used for subjects such as politics, business and entertainment, and he has worked with clients big and small such as the New Yorker, McSweeney’s, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Spy, Oprah, the Atlantic, Harper’s, the New York Times, and many others.

As for the book fair, I didn’t get the books I wanted, but boy oh boy were there eye-candy to behold in the form of illustrated book covers. I managed to snap some of them and I didn’t do it often enough because it’s just awkward to snap books instead of flipping through them! (ps. find me (@pikaland) on instagram too if you like to see me post up random pictures!)

I can’t help it – I love what I do, and I happen to see what I love reflected in my everyday life.

I’m trying to remember this.

In between running Pikaland, taking on freelance projects and cooking up new projects for Pikaland (yes, you read that right!) I sometimes stop to remind myself that I have only two pairs of hands, which means that I need to prioritize and to simplify things, processes and life in general.

I’ve been thinking a lot about focus these days, and realizing the importance of making a deliberate choice of focusing my strengths, goals and how I am going about to achieve them. I’ve taken to dissecting ideas down to their core, eliminating the unnecessary, and I make sure that I devote my time to people who I care about and who care about me in return.

And best of all, while I may not be able to do everything, having a bit of help does tremendous things to the spirit. I’ve added another pair of hands to Pikaland and all I can say is that I’m excited at where things are going. Aiming for the stars seems less daunting when you have others who believe in your vision and is supporting you along the way.
