Amy Swartz is a Toronto-based artist who explores the idea of obsession — not only in the practice of art, but also in humanity’s perceived control over nature, life, and death. (via her About page) . Not only do I enjoy the sense of humour in her pieces – particularly her ongoing work for the Pest series, but I think it’s interesting to see the reactions to the pieces as well. I can almost imagine the artist gleefully putting together new characters in a Frankenstein sort of way!

The question then becomes (well, for me at least) would we treat these creatures any different if their heads were more like ours? Especially since these pieces are dealing with anthropomorphism on a whole different level.

What do you think?

Happy Monday folks!

I’ve been a fan of UK-based illustrator Adam Hancher for the longest time, but just realised that I haven’t profiled him here on Pikaland. What I love about his work is that while it’s predominantly flat (and I’m using the term in an endearing manner), it has these little details that add texture without being overwhelming. His illustrations have wide areas of flat color with simple lines, but with elements that add visual interest via textures and patterns – all of it that adds up to a style that’s a little retro and yet very timeless.

Brosmind is a Barcelona-based studio founded by brothers Juan and Alejandro Mingarro in 2006. You gotta love all their projects (they have a few awesome personal projects, one of which is What’s Inside (pictured second from top) – a collection of 20 characters that are opening themselves with the help of another character from the SHE project). It’s amazing to see how they’ve created entire universes with their illustration; and I’m hoping for more products too – like this amazing Brosmind RV (available in their shop). Who needs a Batmobile when you can be decked out in illustrations in a Brosmobile?
