Good to Know #4: Launch + Giveaway!

There’s plenty of things happening in the background these days at Pikaland, and along the way, the Good to Know project was delayed this month, but I was determined to launch it no matter what (including a horrible thumbnail incident this morning which left me an out-of-commission-thumb for a while.)

This month has been a little hard to put together as everyone was on holiday! So in conjunction with the summer season, you can get this issue of the zine in the mail for only USD$5 instead of the usual USD$7. It’s a perfect way to get back into the groove after summer!

For this round, we asked artists/illustrators and designers a topic about goals and successes:

What goals have you set for your business? How do you measure success? How do you celebrate your successes?

We’re giving away TWO COPIES of the issue when you tell us about your goals and how you celebrate your successes in the comments below! Closing date for entries is next week Tuesday (25th August 8pm PST), and winners will be emailed!

See more on the issue on our Good to Know page and to see all our past issues, you can head here!

  2. Shelby B. says:

my goal is to have enough time to actually finish my tiny projects. Every time i finish one i celebrate by giving it to someone who loves it!. Then i smile and play with my two month old son (hence the reason i don’t get anything done)!!!

  3. Effie says:

I like to set myself little goals, if I think about the big picture too clearly I’ll end up panicking about it. So instead of worrying about finishing my degree I say “This week I would like to fill this moleskine with drawings and do one large drawing” when I do it, to celebrate, I get to buy myself a new moleskine. It’s a rather productive circle I think.

My goals? Right now: – Spend LESS time on the internet. – Spend MORE time actually MAKING something…
(I’m so NOT managing to achieve my goal… and it’s partly YOUR fault LOL)

I celebrate my little successes giving myself a treat: some candy, letting myself sleep in on a non-weekend-day, buying myself something beautiful (mostly children books, comics, prints or sewy items – fabric, buttons…)

  5. Morgan says:

Hmmm… well, my main goal for the next few years is to do well in school and finally graduate! I celebrate when I do well by taking time for myself, to do something that I enjoy doing that I might not have time for normally. Usually that means sewing, or reading all day, or doing something with my friends.
    Thanks!

my goals are to actually make goals…and then follow through, and also to complete projects as opposed to becoming distracted by many projects and then not completing any of them. Yikes. And I agree, the inter-web is a wonderful and yet time-consuming distraction device!

the best way for me to celebrate succeses is to share them with good friends!

  7. Cecilia B. says:

Around the time the summer started, I decided that I was ready to establish a life goal as well as a bunch of little ones. As far as the little ones go, it’s simple things: read more books, draw more, paint more… things that everyone wants to do. And ideally, in the future, I just want to be a person who has a steady job, steady friends, and who travels to little near places on the weekends just for the hell of it. I just want to be genuinely happy and not hold onto every cent, believing that that’s what’s going to make me happy.

At the end of the day, to celebrate accomplishments, spending time with my friends would be wonderful. A card game, a movie, some cookie dough, a good talk.

Sorry for blabbing. It felt nice though.

  8. Bill Porter says:

Something tells me I could really get something from this book. I certainly need to set goals.

  9. margaret says:

I set daily, weekly, and montly goals for my business. I start small and always think about the bigger picture. My current goal is to find and research craft fairs and really know the details before I even apply.

I thought success would be measured in sales but that’s not how it turned out. Hearing people say “I like your stuff” makes me feel as good as getting a sale.

Success comes in so many different forms and so does celebrating- pedicures, a massage, a nice dinner, drinks with friends; it all just depends on my mood.

  10. Maja says:

Haaa, setting goals is so much more amusing than going after them! Although, one seems pointless without the other. Ha. And when it comes to celebrating success, I find jumping and making unarticulated sounds the best way:)!

  11. Simon F. says:

my goal is to make most of my life before i turn grey. and celebrate throughout the years

  12. Priscilla says:

Right now my business goals are actually mini goals that will eventually lead me to my larger goal. I have to break things up in order to not feel overwhelmed. This also allows for more opportunities to celebrate —which I do by taking a day off to just enjoy πŸ™‚

  13. Angela says:

A sale! To sell a painting to support my creative habit is a goal I continuously work on. When I sell a piece I go out for dinner with my biggest supporter and fan, my husband.

  14. Erin Ferree says:

My goal is to participate in my first craft show by the end of the year. I’m starting to build up stock (making paintings and stuffed animals so far) as a first step. Next I just have to find a show to participate in!
When I succeed… I’m not sure how I’ll celebrate. Maybe I will take a day off. Or have a spa day. It will depend on what I need most at that time.

One goal I have for this year is to make an effort to contact all these artists and writers and bloggers who inspire me. I write them long gushy emails and most of them are nice enough to write back and even send me their works! It’s amazing! πŸ™‚
Being successful in this endeavor could be measured by the replies themselves, and I consider those replies the reward. Plus I get to reach out and tell them to keep on creating, hopefully inspiring them to do what they’re so good at. It’s a beautiful cycle! πŸ™‚

  16. Emma Kidd says:

I missed contributing to this one, but I am busting to tell you, as well, about the goals. I am completely in agreement with Cecila B, I recently tried to put in place a life goal too. I have taken a lot of my projects, getting out there, exhibiting and selling in my own hands after being told again recently that “The Financial crisis” was the reason no agencies are taking any more artists at the moment. So I just draw and draw. I set goals for myself to draw something in particular to push myself.

Oh Andrea, you made me chuckle, with your gushing emails idea. It made me smile.
