Jillian Tamaki: The difference between drawing and illustration

Jillian Tamaki
I actually think that most people don’t realize or think about the difference between Drawing and Illustration. They think they’re the same. They’re not. Drawing is an act, whereas Illustration (as I define it) is a profession. Illustration *can* involve drawing (it can expand beyond drawing too, obviously), but it’s actually the act of thinking and problem solving.
Love this quote by Jillian Tamaki, and it’s what I’ve been trying to explain to my students.

Thank you Katie!

Most of the time, your best work may be the stuff that you do for fun. You know, things that you create while you were just fooling around, experimenting with no pressure and with no specific outcome in mind. I really love these experimental found object characters by Emily Eldridge – I’m beginning to look at my cleaning tools in a whole new light now.

What kind of experiments have you done lately that you felt was a personal breakthrough? I’d love to see some show of hands – feel free to share (and link to it) in the comments!

The Oatmeal on Making Things

The Oatmeal: Making Things

The Oatmeal: Making Things

Another fun rambling (and yet oh-so-painfully-relevant) comic by Matthew over at The Oatmeal – this time about making things. This episode features beavers getting it on, bears, a tornado, Donald Draper and Mona Lisa.

For reals.
