Miss Lotion

Loving the cherub characters drawn by Miss Lotion, a Danish-born artist who is currently residing in Copenhagen. She previously schooled in graphic design, but has veered more into illustration — combining the two disciplines to create work that has been commissioned by magazines and clothing lines. I love her hand-lettering as well!

Review: Zines by Sarah McNeil

I got Sarah McNeil’s zines a couple of days ago and I love them. I liked them both so much that I wondered why it took me so long to finally get them, but am glad that I finally did.

Statistical Things That Happen But Don’t Matter and Updated Report of Observations Which Somehow Seem to Reflect Abstractly on Life is a two-part zine based on Sarah’s observations and musings about her life and the things that she is experiencing. Divided into various graphs, Venn diagrams and pie charts, the zines give much insight (in so very few words) about things like communication, money, work, emotions and family.

I find it comforting that we have a few things in common, and I can easily relate to what she’s laid out. What I love is the humor that shines through – an almost dead-pan style (as much as pie charts can muster) about seemingly trivial things like liquids that she’s downed, or the future family tree of a random cat.

Sarah just opened my eyes to a whole new way of communicating data in a personal way. And now I’m obsessed about tracking (very loosely) the random data in my life! You can get the zines in her Etsy shop when she returns from her vacation!

Have a fun weekend and I’ll catch up with you again on Monday!

And also, the Pikaland Artist Bootcamp #1: Making Your Mark will start next week and I’m really excited to be teaching with Jamie again as we work together with our participants to help them explore and discover their own style!

Spaghetti Alla Puttanesca

Love, love, LOVE the fabulously cheery retro-inspired drawings of Paul Bommer. He’s a freelance illustrator based in UK whose lines are lyrical as they are bold, and his hand-lettering is amazing as well! You can view most of his illustrations on his Flickr stream which is updated regularly, and he’s in the midst of opening an Etsy shop!
