Good to Know 7

Thank you so much for coming along for the Good to Know project!

As a token of appreciation, you can download the PDF copy of the zine above for free, and if you’d like to have a copy to keep, it costs just USD$6.00 and already includes shipping. I’ve tried to see if I could afford to send it to everyone for free, but I don’t think that’s possible — so this price will cover the minimum shipping + misc fees!

I would love it if you would love to participate again in the next issue! The topic for the EIGHT issue is below, and you can email me with your reply anytime before the 25th of March 2010:

*What sort of support do you receive as an artist? (Financial, emotional, community, etc.) What advice would you share with fellow artists about getting help?

Big hugs,

Good to Know #7: Plagiarism

There’s a lot of giveaways the past week, and although I think it’s exciting to have more, I wanted today to be different. There won’t be one, because I think everyone would benefit from the sharing of today’s post; courtesy of our very generous participants in the Good to Know project.

There has been so much talk about plagiarism lately that I can’t help but feel a little numb. And upset. And angry at how many times I hear of others who can’t come up with an original thought. There’s this, this, and this.

As plagiarism is the topic for the latest Good to Know zine, we hear from other participants on what happened to them, and what steps they took to handle the matter. Some shared with us their difficult stories, and others had uplifting words of advice, but we were very touched by those who responded and shared generously. In that same spirit of generosity, the entire copy of the Good to Know issue #7 is available to read online over on ISSUU. (For those who still love a physical copy/ or prefer to read a downloaded copy, you can get their fix right here. )

Also, a big thank you to Julia Rothman of Book by its Cover and Amy Everhart for so generously allowing their very helpful FAQ on Copyright to be reproduced in the issue. And of course, Seth Godin is in there too.

On a side note, Pikaland just turned 2 years old in February! A special thank you goes to our sponsors, who have graciously supported us through it all, and also for those who purchase Pikaland’s Good to Know zine series.

Quirky illustrations, zines and posters from Rand Renfrow. He hit the nail on the head with It Seems Like It’s Missing Something — an illustrated book of quotes collected from people’s humorous encounters with outsiders to the design and art world; a collaboration with Shaun Fox. I bet the designer who has these sort of clients are tearing their hair out instead of laughing when told the same thing!
