Happy Chinese New Year!

It’s the Chinese New Year here, and what better way of ringing in 2009 with TWO celebrations (one of which was just three weeks ago)? Over here at 12 midnight, you can hear firecrackers and lion dance troupes going on their rounds to usher in the lunar new year. Red cloths and lanterns adorn homes and the streets will soon be filled with kids whose pockets are stuffed to the brim with red packets (angpows) with enough change for them to buy a candy bar or two.

My boy and I are sitting on a fine line — we’re officially man and wife, yet still considered unofficially married in the traditional sense as we have not gone through a proper reception nor tea ceremony due to lack of funds. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to receive angpows. I’m certain though, that I’m not handing out any! (yes, it’s a little weird, I know—normally people go out and get engaged, but in Chinese customs, there isn’t any sort of engagement procedure…)

So if you feel I’m ringing in the new year twice, it’s exactly what it looks like. I’s just to make sure that the new year DOES indeed bring in much needed joy and happiness around the world! 😉

Have a great Chinese New Year on my behalf, wherever you may be, and Gong Hei Fatt Choy!
