This week, we speak to Lesley Barnes, one of the illustrators whom Amelia challenged to pick up more colors in her work. The result? What stands out about living where you are, and what is your daily schedule like?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nI live in Glasgow (which is the largest city in Scotland) in an old Victorian house. The old houses in Glasgow all have extremely high ceilings and I think this makes you quite spoiled as it gives you a space to think and lets your ideas move around. Whenever I go anywhere else I always miss the lack of \u2018head space!\u2019<br \/>\nI wake up, put on <span class=\"caps\">BBC<\/span> 6music, have a cup of tea and try to get on with it!<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong><em>How did you get your start in illustration?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nI have only very recently described myself as an illustrator. Although I have always loved drawing, I actually studied English at university, so always feel a bit guilty describing myself as an illustrator as I have no formal training!<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.pikaland.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/2517.jpg\" class=\"image\" title=\"Lesley Barnes\" alt=\"Lesley Barnes\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Could you tell us more about your thought process when you start a piece?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nI love books and especially the cover design of old Penguins  (you can take a look at my short film <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/1322323\">herzog and the monsters<\/a> to see just how obsessed I am!) and when I am starting a piece of work whether it is illustration or animation I think of it in terms of how it would look as a book cover. I love animated title sequences too and I think that this is because they are like the cover of a book come-to-life.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.pikaland.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/2518.jpg\" class=\"image\" title=\"Lesley Barnes\" alt=\"Lesley Barnes\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What&#8217;s your favorite project so far?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n\u2028There are so many! One of my favourite recent projects was working with illustrator Thereza Rowe on an animation called <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/11226935\">Seven Little Houses<\/a> I\u2019m also really enjoying illustrating a pack of playing cards on my blog <a href=\"http:\/\/anaceinthepack.blogspot.com\">An Ace in the Pack<\/a> I think I am still most proud of my animation <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/1322323\">herzog and the monsters<\/a> which was the first animated \u2018film\u2019 that I created.<br \/>\n\u2028\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong><em>Would you care to share your studio space?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.pikaland.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/2522.jpg\" class=\"image\" title=\"Lesley Barnes\" alt=\"Lesley Barnes\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.pikaland.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/2523.jpg\" class=\"image\" title=\"Lesley Barnes\" alt=\"Lesley Barnes\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What or who inspires you?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n\u2028Charley Harper, Edward Bawden, Alexander Girard, Saul Bass, Men with Moustaches, Brass Bands, Red Socks, and the animation \u2018Hedgehog in the Fog\u2019 by Yuri Norstein.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What keeps you motivated?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nA cup of tea in the morning\u2026and one before I go to bed.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.pikaland.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/2516.jpg\" class=\"image\" title=\"Lesley Barnes\" alt=\"Lesley Barnes\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What&#8217;s your favourite tool?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nProbably a big sheet of white paper and some indian ink!
