Draw Your Own Alphabet

I love drawing alphabets. I don’t think I’m very good at it, but I try anyway.

So when there’s a book out that tells me that there’s a way to draw different types of fonts – I’m sold. I mean, why wouldn’t I want to add the ability to draw hand-drawn fonts to my drawing repertoire? I’d be silly to toss that idea aside! While my copy is making its way to me in the mail (and I saw great previews of the book via Amazon), I just couldn’t wait to let you know that you can win a copy of this book right now!

One of my sponsors for this month, the lovely Princeton Architectural Press is giving away FIVE – I repeat – FIVE copies of Draw Your Own Alphabets: Thirty Fonts to Scribble, Sketch, and Make Your Own by Tony Seddon worth USD$19.95 each to five different readers. No matter if you’re in Kuala Lumpur (like I am), in South Africa, or in Australia, you can be in the running to win a copy!

So what you need to do is this: share with me your favorite font in the whole wide world (it can be hand-drawn, or not, it doesn’t matter!) in the comments below, and you’ll be entered to win a copy of the book. Deal?

Be sure to have them in by Tuesday, 30th April to be in the running! We’ll email the winners after that, so if you snooze, you lose!

UPDATE:

Thank you all for participating! The winners, generated randomly is Elisa, Ana Pina, Julia Levis, Ellen and Terina! I’ll be sending an email out to you guys shortly, so watch out for it! In the meantime, to make sure you don’t miss out on future cool giveaways, sign up for our mailing list!

  1. I do use a lot of “hand-drawn” fonts in my work but haven’t plucked up the confidence to do my own though would love to – this sounds like just the sort of book I’d relish! Thanks for the generous giveaway and good luck to everyone!

  9. Gotta love hand drawn type. Fun stuff. I’m a big fan of helvetica for easy on the eye, easy to read, clean type. But organic hand drawn type often has an appeal that brings the perfect solution together in a design. My daughter is an up and coming illustrator/designer and I would love to gift this book to her. Thanks.

  13. Oh, I´m so so super excited by this book! I could sit and play a round of “What font is that?” with other designer friends for days. But seriously, I am an illustrator who relishes a need for hand drawn type whenever possible, so pass this book on over. It will get prime real estate on my bookshelf. 🙂

  14. Recently, I’ve grown quite fond of Proxima Nova. Since I have no budget to buy fonts, however, I’ve discovered an extremely similar font, Montserrat, which looks quite nice as well.

Close runner up and definite winner of “most interesting font” would be Averia, mainly because of how it was developed.

  17. My favourite typeface is American Typewriter, probably purely for nostalgic reasons – the I ❤ NY logo is the first logo design I loved and it was the logo that caused me to realise there was an art to creating logo designs and was in some small way, a stepping stone to my path to becoming a graphic designer and illustrator. Recently though, I’m quite intrigued by the Brothers typeface and I have a special affection for Trade Gothic.

  22. WOW what a choice. Hand drawn I love one I’ve seen called ‘Handvetica’ basically a hand drawn version of Helvetica, it’s really simple and creative. My dad created a font with Fontographer many years ago, it was for a chess magazine and each charater was a chess piece, lovingly hand created before the age of graphics tablets on a very old Mac (not old at the time). I couldn’t tell you it’s name but it was the best thing I’ve ever seen. Would be good to add this to my hand drawn book collection. Best of luck to all xxx

As far as font crushes? I was asked what my favorite is once and I was stumped. There are so many, and they all come with their own viewer’s emotional reaction. For a time I was in love with Perpetua. I still quite adore Wyld. I’ve always appreciated Century Gothic and Adobe Garamond. Mountain Retreat is a breath of fresh air, and Bonnington reminds me of a classy Speakeasy.

Remember though when each person had their own personal font? Just because everything was– at one time– handwritten? My son’s school has chopped cursive from the curriculum block and is instead teaching “computer lit”. How depressing! I miss my mom’s script handwriting. I cling to old postcards, antique books with inscriptions, and dated love letters from the 40s for the individual, completely unique handwritten fonts preserved on each. *Swoon, and sigh*.
Daydreams and reminiscing aside, thank you Amy for the opportunity to try and win!

But, I will aquiesce and say that right now, in this moment, my fave font is designed by a cool typography house based in Melbourne, Australia, called Letterbox. The font is called ‘Bisque’. It is ridiculously cute and needs to be used carefully or it can look inappropriate.

Back in my college days we designed and hand drew fonts quite a bit. My fave one of those was one called ‘meringue’ which I designed based on my mother’s old kenwood whisk attachment for her massive old benchtop beater. It was great fun!

i think that mixed font in a line will make it look more surreal, especially if its hand drawn. John hendrix is an excellent artist in devouring this kind of approach.

im not good(really worst) in computer/software drawing. so I cant call my favourite font type/name, because it is based on my observations. But i just love the concept of mixed font.

for me, font in art, is a geometry or pattern that carries information, directly. How we fashioned it, is what makes the work different to other.

and i really need this book!

because it describe/explain the nature of the font and how it work to each other. it’s like the ‘science’ of font.

  103. I love the fonts Helen Dardik and Nate Williams draw in their artwork. (I’m a bit jealous about that …)
    And thanks for the chance!

  104. Great giveaway! I’ve always been tempted to create my own fonts!

Picking just one favorite is impossible but I’m still in love with Archer so we’ll go with that.

  105. I love this vintage alphabet by Cathe Holden: http://pinterest.com/pin/364087951094990258/. The swirling leaves and huge blocky shadows really appeal to me. I’d really love to get my hands on a copy of this alphabet drawing book – though I’ve tried to imagine what the other letters of this alphabet would look like, I don’t know enough about letter dimensions to create my own yet. YET!

  106. As much as I LOVE fancy and hand-drawn fonts, my go-to font is always Futura. It’s classic but modern, and sits well with other crazy fonts. Would love to be in with a chance to with this great book!

  107. I would love to own this book!
My favourite font would be Suomi Hand Script. The flow of characters is no natural..like the Loop that binds ‘s’ and an ‘e’..its truly a well thought of font!

  108. Currently, I’m crushing on Skeleton Key which I’ve used for my logo (with a modification to add capital letters because I seriously need capital letters!). It has this nice weight to the center of each letter and any intersections of the lines, but the edges gently taper off… it’s artistic but really legible. I’m in love!

I’ve been wanting to create my own fonts as another outlet for my creativity!

  110. I love writing the alphabet too; I’ve been paying homage to those 26 letters and 10 numbers for fifty years. It’s a meditation of sorts. My fave is Broadway Engraved, as seen here; http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/broadway/engraved/

I started lettering it when I was nine while I was at my father’s office in the Time Life building in NYC, where he was an art director. I’m an art director now, and it’s all because of my love for lettering!

    Thanks!
