Sketchbook Project Limited Edition Vol.1
Posted by Amy on Wednesday November 23, 2011

Art House Co-op just launched the Sketchbook Project Limited Edition Vol. 1 last week, and this time, the project is open to just 5,000 participating artists!
Every contributor to the Limited Edition Vol. 1 will be included in a series of art books documenting the project to be published in the fall of 2012; and not only that — each sketchbook will also be exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Library. Together, the book series will provide insight into the imagination and process of each artist participating in the project and present an interpretive portrait of the Sketchbook Project community.
Art House has offered Pikaland readers a 15% discount coupon when you join the Sketchbook Project Limited Edition Vol. 1 – just enter PIKALAND5000 at checkout!

Sketchbook: Marina Grechanik
Posted by Amy on Tuesday October 25, 2011
I’m sick today so I’m spending a lot of time in bed, but also I’m looking through a lot of flickr photos from the Pikaland Flickr group and I came across these sketchbooks by Marina Grechanik from Israel.
I love how detailed each one is – from the setting to the person’s face (and sometimes exaggerated features!) You can read more about Marina via her portfolio or see more images via her Flickr stream.

Sketchbook Project X Pikaland
Posted by Amy on Tuesday August 2, 2011

The last time when I participated in the Sketchbook Project. organized by the friendly folks at Art House Co-op, it was 2009 (you can see my sketchbook here). And right now as I’m typing this, they’ve recently opened up submissions for their 2012 Sketchbook Project (which is 100% community funded by the way) – which is akin to a concert for sketchbooks. They bring it around cross country in the USA, scan them for you (for a small fee) and basically treat them like royalty – showing them off at whatever chance they get. Best of all, 2012 is the year where they’ll break international boundaries and will exhibit at places like London and Melbourne.
They’ve teamed up with Pikaland to offer YOU – our lucky readers you – a chance to be a part of the Sketchbook Project. And we’re not talking about just one miserable sketchbook giveaway. There’s FIVE with each one to be given out to FIVE lucky reader who answers this question in our comments section:
Why do you sketch?
And not only that, we’re going to be following the progress of these 5 winners – and they’ll be profiled on Art House’s site as well. Your sketchbook be grouped in a special Pikaland archive (locally and online) and of course, be subjected to a royal treat that every sketchbook deserves.
Sounds great? What are you waiting for? The giveaway ends next week on 9th August.
For those who are anxious to start the Sketchbook Project right this instant, you can get a copy of your sketchbook here with a special 10% discount just for Pikaland readers – enter discount code PIKAFRIEND during checkout and bada-bing!
SCOOT!
{The above sketchbook spread is done by Mikey Maruszak, and taken from Art House’s website.}
*UPDATE: Commenting has now closed, thanks so much for participating. The winners of this giveaway are Jodi, Alexandra, Saga, Mareike and Sarah, as chosen via random.org!

Loco for local: Eechinghandmade
Posted by Amy on Thursday July 21, 2011

This week, we look at a plush-toy maker whose shop is well known here as EeChing Handmade. Kho Tain Ching is from Sarawak, East Malaysia and her toys are one-of-a-kind collectible beauties! She also has something she’s giving away at the end of the interview — read on!

Name: Kho Tain Ching
Location: Kuching, Sarawak, East Malaysia
Website/Shop: Etsy
Blog: eechinghandmade.blogspot.com
Illustration media: pencil, pen, color pencil, marker
You live in Malaysia — what stands out about living here, and what is your daily schedule like?
I love that there is less natural disasters such as earth-quake, tornado, and volcanoes here! I help my parent in an old grocery shop during the day, and the rest of time I’ll do anything I like such as drawing, reading, making doll, updating my blog, taking picture of my works & playing with my dogs.
And does being in Malaysia influence your art in any way?
Yes, especially the artists from West Malaysia… but we still have much opportunity to improve the art scene in Malaysia.
In Malaysia, I find that the progress of the art and craft community has yet to catch on. What do you think can be done to increase awareness of art and craft locally?
We should have more art & craft markets which can provide a platform to support & help to expose artists & designer; and also media such as magazines, newspapers & websites, education and exhibitions all play a part in spreading news about our art.

How did you get your start?
I can’t remember when I start drawing… when I was young, I like to draw characters from comics like Doraemon, LaoFuZhi & Yomiko
